@TobiSGD: bad answer. He is not TRYING to access Linux from Windows, he is accessing Windows from Linux.
VNC will work, you only need to install VNC server on the windows side (TightVNC is good there) and configure it. Then you can run vncviewer on the linux side to make the connection.
VNC is the best option if you want a desktop environment, but desktops are generally frowned upon in the server world. You want to have the minimum number of necessary services running on a server in order to make it more secure, and VNC requires xinit, which is full of security holes.
For a server you're just playing around with in order to become familiar with Linux, a GUI is fine, just don't make it accessible to the outside world. Once you want this thing to do real work and accept remote connections, it's time to ditch the desktop and go full command-o.
There's also XDCMP forwarding over ssh, which resolves a lot of the security concerns regarding VNC, but the problem is that it's a network hog, and should only be used for limited applications.
