Redhat does but Umbuntu doesn't?
Hi All,
I've been using Redhat FC3 for some time now and I want to switch to Debian or a Debian-based project like Umuntu. I have the install disk for Umbuntu 5.04 and tried to install it last night. There were two issues that stumped me: 1) Umbuntu detected my 3com card (3C905B-TX) but after the install was complete, I could not pass packages through it. I could ping my loopback, the ip address I assigned to the card, but not the gateway. I reinstalled Redhat and it picked the card up and I was on the Internet with no problem. Frustrated, I installed Debian 3.1 Sarge and the same issue came up that happened with Umbuntu. I know that Umbuntu is basically a Debian Distro, but what is happening with my card? 2) When I set up Debian, all was fine but when I set up Umbuntu it never provided me a place to set up a root account. I did the setup twice to make sure. It had me set up a user account but that was it. Am I missing something? I very much would like to be an Umbuntu user but am stuck right now. Can someone please give me a nudge? Thanks so much, aquaboot |
Have a look here:
http://ubuntuguide.org/ and https://wiki.ubuntu.com//RootSudo http://www.ubuntulinux.org/support/d.../root/faq_view this will explain why root is disabled by default and how to use sudo. peace V |
Thanks for the root info, I'll check it out. Any ideas on the NIC?
Many Thanks, Aquaboot |

2) I believe that for security Ubuntu uses a sudo system, check out their site http://www.ubuntu.com/ or search the Ubuntu forum here. |
1. Please, it's "Ubuntu", not "Umbuntu".
got it. 2. What's the rest of your hardware? can you be a bit more specific? :-) 3. What's your 'net connection? Esp. any DHCP server? no DHCP- just static ip (redhat grabs it and runs with no problem and absolutely no ip, gateway, netmask or dns changes). I provide excatly the same info at setup with both distros. 4. Do you have the Ubuntu live CD as well as the Install disc? Yes, I have the live cd. 5. Any interest in try SimplyMEPIS? I appreciate the suggestion. Why should I be interested? Sincerely Appreciative, aquaboot 2) I believe that for security Ubuntu uses a sudo system, check out their site http://www.ubuntu.com/ or search the Ubuntu forum here. Thanks. Will do. dns |
Does your nic card work with the liveCD?
If so you can see what the config file looks like for the nic card and copy it over. Also if your Ubuntu liveCD does not work try using knoppix. peace V |
Is this an ISA card or PCI?
Whatever the case try sudo modprove 3c905 on the command line |
cuiq must have posted while I was composing, looks like much more specific help on issue 2) than I was able to provide.
So, let's look at 3. What I was trying to elicit is whether you are on a LAN & if you have the option to have a central DHCP server. For instance, I have 4 machines on-line plus firewall. The firewall is also my DHCP server. It is set to assign the local IP addresses on a "permanent" basis by MAC address. What does your set up look like? 4. Have you tried the live CD? 5. SimplyMEPIS is also Debian based, & might just work. On the other hand, you may have found a flaw in Debian... |
Cool. The live cd doesn't get my packages out through the NIC. I'll try the sudo modprove 3C905. Thx. I have a paper to work on today and tomorrow, so I'm sticking with FC3 until Wed. I'll post the results of the experiment with Ubuntu then. Again, thanks for the help.

Sorry
that should be sudo modprobe 3c905 peace V |
Could you post the output of `ifconfig` please? And also `cat /etc/network/interfaces`.
|
That's a good idea. I'm back on FC3 until I get a chance this weekend to do an Ubuntu reinstall. I have a new Netgear NIC that I'll try. If the issue comes up again, I'll post the contents of ifconfig and /etc/network/interfaces. Thanks for the suggestion.
