Recover data

Hi. My USB disk (19 GB) has been overwritten. I had several files there I want to if possible recover. Most important is 2 guitar-books I scanned and saved to that disk. Have installed and tried to recover the disk with ddrescuue. It makes a file 'rescue' (19 GB) wich I can not open because no application to open this with. As I write this I am logged in as root, but no application to open this resue file. Can anyone please help? This is the first time I try to rescue data in Ubuntu Hardy, and I have no idea what to do. In this matter I am a newbie.

Very thankful for help.

Hi,

Depending on the file system on your USB, the answer will be different.

If it's ext3, have a look at this post

If it's fat, you'll need to find a windows recovery tool and use that to recover the files. There might be something to do that in Linux that I don't know about.

Hi, check out testdisk and Photorec, by CGSecurity. FOSS, and available for most GNU/Linux distros.

I have had success with these recovering deleted files from a flash drive, and cd-roms.

You have some reading to do, and you will need a partition equal to or larger than the partition you want to recover.

Check your package manager to see if it is provided by your distribution first.

Good Luck, regards Glenn
