Recording problems

After I ungraded to Hardy I found that audacity would not record from line in. I checked to be sure that the capture button in the line in in kmix was checked and it was. I have tried other programs such as sound recorder and none detect the input feed, but I do hear what I was playing through the speakers. I suspect the problem could be with pluseaudio, anybody have any suggestions.
Note: playback works fine. But recording is effected from the line in on my sound card.
I have since ungraded to Kubuntu 9.10 and have the same issue

9.10 brought considerable changes to sound configuration. I'm an Ubuntu user without hands on with KDE. Perhaps my Gnome experience can be a frame of reference. Right clicking the sound/speaker icon I then select Sound Preferences. My issues were all with the microphone so I went to the Input tab. There were 2 devices listed, both the same description with the 1st one set. I selected the 2nd and the Connector: changed to "Analog Microphone/Input 1/Microphone 1". The input level meter now registered when I spoke. From a Gnome perspective I'd selected the default sound input for Gnome compliant applications. Skype for example is a generic ap which had its own and different method of sound configuration.
