Recommended graphics tablet for Ubuntu?
 

Can anyone please recommended a good graphics tablet that will just work (or with only minimal fuss) with Ubuntu?

I've found it very difficult to find HCL information for graphics tablets, and have tried linuxquestions, tldp and the ubuntu site and found it almost impossible to find any listed as supported; does this mean that graphics tablet support is only sketchy (no pun untended)?

Ideally I'm looking for something of at least A4 size, and USB would be helpful.

Although I'm not afraid of fiddling or the command-line, I don't fancy wasting my time getting something obscure to work; I'd rather “vote” with my money and buy something that is at least vaguely supported. But I don't really know anything about the different available graphics tablets out there, beyond that other people have posted saying that wacom devices are supposed to work (does this mean all wacom devices or just some?)

Any suggestions?

Not that I ever actually work with tablets (so bear me), but it seems at least the word Wacom comes up in a few places. Wacom seems to be manufacturing tablets too, so maybe you'd like to try their products?

If you're a good negotiator, you could try to make a deal with the shop you buy the tablet from, that if it turns it doesn't work under Linux without a great trouble, you can switch it to another one or something..not every salesman agrees to do that, but I've found that there are some stores that actually have good service; they listen to a customer and instead of just trying to get the money out of her/him, try to get the customer happy at the same time. For that reason I myself will, if I can, rather spend a little more money on a shop where the service is as good as the products (and neither one is bad), than buy something cheap from a shop that doesn't guarantee anything.

I've good luck with a Wacom Graphire4. All that was required was some xorg.conf changes. You'll have to check to see what they have in A4 size. Mine is 4x5 and maps well to my screen even though its a wide aspect ratio.
