Oh dear oh dear.

Ubutnu uses sudo so your root password is just your user password. To execute a command as root type either:
sudo command
or
sudo -s

Yes of course ubutnu has mp3 support, depending on what player you use but by default you should open up your package manager and
install gstreamer-mad.

Consult http://ubuntuguide.org/ in future, it answers most of those kind of starter questions.

Well, if you want Ubuntu with KDE, then try Kubuntu, which is basically Ubuntu+KDE, but without GNOME.

You can install KDE on Ubuntu, by doing "apt-get install kde". I think you need to make sure that other repositories are enabled in your /etc/apt/sources.list.

I have just installed it as well, just to give it a test run. So far I like it, but i have to spend some more time with it. I have been also giving Debian Sarge a try and so far the ubuntu distros are more favourable.
