You will need to get a 64-bit kernel with SMP enabled. 6.10's kernel uses both of my Centrino Duo cores by default, so the only thing extra you will need to do is verify that the kernel is 64-bit. Open up Synaptic and search for "linux kernel image"

This is my current kernel image, it updated it itself, how do i know if it has it, sorry im a linux newb

Linux kernel image for version 2.6.17 on x86/x86_64
This package contains the Linux kernel image for version 2.6.17 on
x86/x86_64.

Also includes the corresponding System.map file, the modules built by the
packager, and scripts that try to ensure that the system is not left in an
unbootable state after an update.

Supports Generic processors.

Geared toward desktop systems.

You likely do not want to install this package directly. Instead, install
the linux-generic meta-package, which will ensure that upgrades work
correctly, and that supporting packages are also installed.

You should be fine then. To verify exactly how Linux recognizes your CPUs, have a look at /proc/cpuinfo (i.e. run "cat /proc/cpuinfo" in a terminal). It should show info for two processors, and it should recognize the fact that they are 64-bit.

How to download ubuntu smp kernel image?

Dear all,

I have difference issue, my laptop is centrino duo core processor but ubuntu detect it as single core. Initially my Ubuntu 6.10 is installed in centrino single core processor (1.6GHz), finally I'm change my laptop and I simply transfer entire OS to new hard disk(So the kernel still using standard kernel).

Now, how I can install smp kernel to make use the duo core functionality(I can't see in repository)? And my /proc/cpuinfo telling me I have only 1 cpu.

Thank you,
Regards,
Ks

With Ubuntu 7.04 SMP is now part of the generic image. Before it was a separate image. On the command line do "uname -a" and you'll get a summary of kernel and hardware info. It should say SMP.

Just look for (and download) the kernel with -686 in the name. At least in Dapper, this is the how the SMP enabled kernel was named.
Nothing else to do - just install it and boot it.
