progress, but I still cannot boot 6.1

I ran through the install of 6.1 with no apparent problems, but when I booted up for 'the first time' it stops at the lines I entered below, and that is the end of that adventure.....

When I boot, I get grub, choose the ubuntu install (dual booting win2k) it give me the splash screen, and then goes to more text, and dies.....

The last messages on the screen as it hangs are:
------------------
activate swap OK
fsck
There are differences between boot sector and its backup
Differences: (offsetriginal/backup)
28:3f/b2,29:00.cb, 30:.be, 31:00/02

Not automatically fixing this.

/dev/hda5:23745 files, 322825/1280053 clusters
----------------------
and that is all I get. Sits there forever. dev/hda5 is my 32G fat32 data partition for my windows system, so I reckon its not happy for some reason?

I booted windows, and forced a chkdsk, to no avail. It just boots to those messages, and dies.

I am up for any recommendations, or suggestions :-)

Thanks again

I am not sure what the error message itself means, but it looks like fsck is generating the error when it checks your file system(s) for consistency. I would suggest booting into a live CD and using fsck to check your Ubuntu partition(s). You do this with the partitions unmounted. Perhaps your installation CD can be booted as live CD. If not, you can use KNOPPIX, Damn Small Linux, or one of a bunch of other live CDs. It sounds like you will have to tell it how you want to fix the problem rather than it fixing it automatically. You might want to first read up on fsck using its man page.

You can also google on the phrase "There are differences between boot sector and its backup". I found 189 matches, but I didn't wade through them all.

Or you can reinstall and hope for the best.
