Problems installing Kbuntu
I am trying to install kbuntu but I get the following error during the install base system.
debootstrap program exited error value 1 chk /target/var/log/bootstrap.log If I continue anyway i get the error /var/log/syslog or see virtual console. I can run the system as a live DVD but I just can not install it on my machine which is whatI want to do. |

By the looks of it it is a message pointing you to /var/log/syslog or to the virtual console to see more about what happened. |
jomen, I can not actually install a system. after those errors it keeps saying that there is a faulty system there so I aborted the install.
I did not verify the files that I downloaded and during install it does flash "file corrupt" several times. |
...in that case it is probable to find the same thing in the log-files mentioned above...
Is'nt kubuntu a live-cd? I find it possible but not likely that it is working all fine while it fails to install - OTOH - one corrupt file on the cd is enough to make the install fail - so this is what you should do - verify the downloaded files if you can - or burn a new copy of the cd and try again with that. |
"verify the downloaded files if you can"
How do I do this? |
Sometimes (really - normally...) there is not only a file or iso-image to download but also a checksum-file (of a similar name but with a different extension) which can be used to verify the integrity of the downloaded file(s).
I don't know how to do this exactly but there might be instuctions on how to do it on the very site you downloaded from. That's why I said: "if you can"... I'd rather suspect a faulty burn of the cd though and would try to burn another copy. |
First verify the iso file before you do anything else.
See LQ->Linux Tutorials->LQ ISO->checking the md5sum in windows. The checksum file should be on the server you downloaded the iso from, otherwise check the kubuntu site. Once the file is verified, then try reburning the cd. |
I did not know this tutorial - thanks for pointing at it. I thought verifying the file could prove a bit difficult when he has no linux running where he could use md5sum, so I suggested the second burn. So it's not hard to do with eighter OS...

For the benefit of other this problem is now solved and I did it as follows:
at boot type server instead of enter. then login as the user you set up when you get the login promt. then type cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/sources.list_backup edit the /etc/apt/sources.list file and uncomment anything that looks like a web address. save the file and exit out of the editor. then type apt-get update then apt-get install xubuntu-desktop startx At the end of this I end up with a beautiful looking xfce menu system and my system is bang upto date. Hope that this helps someone else out there. |
