Problems after v8.10 update install

i have just update my duel boot laptop from kubuntu v8.04 to v8.10 and i am now experiencing a few problems.

to start off with, i had problems doing the update via the web. it took three attempts to finish the install. so im not sure if thats got something to do with the problems that im experiencing or not.

my problems so far:
1. video playback in kaffeine and dragon skips a few frames at a time during playback.
2. the scroll feature on my mouse pad no longer works.
3. some of the screen saver screens do not fill the entire screen. just say a quarter of the screen.
4. had trouble connecting to msn using pidgen and kopete. but for some strange reason, it has fixed itself. not sure if i will get the same problem on next boot up.

i can't think of any more at the moment. but if i do find any, i will add them.

by the way, i didn't have any of the above problems when i was on v8.04. if i was to uninstall v8.10 and reinstall v8.04, can i still get updates for v8.04 and not upgrade to v8.10?

thanks for any advise or help in advanced. and please be gently with me...as im a noob to all of this.

I have also found video issues in 8.10. The default movie player, Totem I believe it is, does not work. It will start to play an .avi file. However, if I resize or move it the playback goes black. Sound only. I have been told that it is likely do to some major "improvements" in X (the GUI display guts). Anyhow, I did discover a player called SMPlayer which I like a lot better. I did have to change the video driver to X11 in the preferences for better color rendition.

Based on the other symptoms you report it seems that your video card. You might check to see if you are running "restricted" drivers for the card (a little icon on the upper panel indicated restricted drivers in use - at least it did in 8.04). If so, play with the video settings and try using the default driver. Ask if you need help with this. I will have to look at the wife's PC. I believe I changed the drivers on it and perhaps I can describe how.

As to 8.04 - that is the long term support release. It will be supported - updates available - through April 2011.

I've had that happen to me before... sometimes upgrades in Ubuntu go poorly and the best way around it is to simply do a fresh install of the newer version. So long as you have your home directory on a separate partition it is a simple matter of reinstalling any extra applications and codecs.

thanks for the replies

i tried an updated my video drivers and i still had the same problems. so i decided to uninstall v8.10 and re-install v8.04...

now the video's and mouse pad work perfectly. but i still can't get msn to work in pigdin or kopete. i've even installed emesebe (msn only msg'er) and that will not connect. but im not too bothered about msn...as most of my friends use yahoo....but i would like to get it to work..as it did work when i was on v8.04 before the v8.10 update.

I really encourage you to install 8.10 (not an upgrade a fresh install) if that problem persists let us know and we'll take it from there.
