problems after update

after updating ubuntu 6.10 using the built in update manager (i installed all the updates found) i know have four new options added to my grub loader:

Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.18.2-34-default Default
Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.18.2-34-default Default (recovery mode)
Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.18.2-34-default
Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.18.2-34-default (recovery mode)

as well as the original two:

Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-10-generic
Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-10-generic (recovery mode)

Ive not tried any of the recovery modes as but Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.18.2-34-default Default will not boot just give an error
Quote:
kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)
Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.18.2-34-default boots but has errors e.g. runnning ndiswrapper it complains that /lib/modules/2.6.18.2-34-default does not exist also it does not find my ethernet card. Theres probably more problems i didn't stay booted for long before switching back to Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-10-generic which works fine.

heres the code from my menu.lst file

Code:
title Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.17-10-generic

I update religiously from Ubuntu repositories and I'm still on 2.6.17-10. Did 2.6.18 come from Ubuntu?
