Hi

This error is normal if your are not connected to internet your system can't synchronize the clock.

So get back to your problem:
1. How do you connect to internet (ADSL? if yes do you use a modem or a router?)
2. check your IP address and tell me what is it (just to see if it's a correct one. To do so you can do this
- Open a Terminal
- Type su and type your root password
- Type ifconfig it should display your eth0 configuration interface which is your network card (if it doesn't that meen your network card is not enable. to enable it type ifconfig eth0 up and dhclient)

3. Still in the terminal you can try to ping 72.14.207.99 (one of the IP address of google.com) if you get some reply that meen you have access to internet but you need to setup your DNS in /etc/resolve.conf

So if you have a Windows computer you can try to transfer few files beween each other to check first of all if your transfer speed between your Linux box and your router is correct.

If this work fine i don't see why your linux box would be slower than your windows computer. (for me it doesn't make sense)

If you find that the transfer is very slow that meen the problem come from some where between your router and you linux box
Solution:
- You can try to change the ethernet cable(it's look like stupid, but trust me on this that can solve the problem some times even if you get the connection "mainly if you have a long cable try to use a shorter one CAT 5")
- Check if your network card is well set as full duplex.
- Try to reduce the MTU (in most of the case the default value is 1500 and it should work just fine, but that can be too hight for some modem or router and flood them, so that may cause the issue as well)
