Problem with Installing Ubuntu 6.10 -- going too slow

Hey,

I have a laptop that I'm trying to install ubuntu to.

*1.3 GHz Pentium M (non-64 bit as you can see)
*512 MB Memory
*30 gig hard drive

I've never had trouble using live cd's on this computer before, I've used backtrack, knoppix and damn small; though, I've finally decided to download ubuntu 6.10 and install it to my hard drive, there's a small problem however -- its going way to slow.

I get the regular startup page when I boot from the cd, and it boots into the live cd mode with nary an error, but this takes about 20 min, which is weird because I have both a fast enough processor and enough memory to handle this cd. It takes so long to boot into the live cd mode, but then when I try to click the "install" icon, the memory is so clogged that no install window popups up for almost 30 min.

I know I have the right iso, ubuntu 6.10 for i386 desktop.

It takes forever to load the install window, and never fully does it after I wait, I'm wondering if I'm doing anything wrong, and if so, is there a possibility for me to install without going into the live cd?

Thanks

I had this problem (or something very similar). What solved it for me was to use hdparm to set using_dma = 1 on the CD drive

Is this the command that I would use?

hdparm -d1 /dev/cdrom

Sorry, I'm a little new to linux, I only used live cds for media and text editing.

Hey,

I fixed the problem. For some reason, the cd would let me install on another laptop of mine, but not the one I was using -- for I kept getting error messages when I would use hdparm. I swapped the hard drives between laptops, installed it on the one laptop hard drive I wanted it to be on, and then reswapped the hds one more time so they were in their respective places.

I want to thank Andrew Benton for his help from 2 posts ago, I never even knew about hdparm until he mentioned it, thanks again.

As with the installation... A whole new set of problems have arised, but I'll post those in another thread.
