problem with dvd drives

i have a problem with my dvd-roms. Yesterday they stopped working. I mean when i insert a cd into the drive the light remains open for a while and then it closes. But it does not mount the cd. If i go to my computer and try to mount manually the cd it says: mount: No medium found. Also i can't boot from the cd. It's like there is no disk in there.

BUT if i insert a dvd-movie its working just fine. It mounts it, opens the program and see the movie.

I don't understand...

Please someone help me.
thanx in advance

have you dont a dist-upgrade or anything along those lines? something may have broken.

the "hal" daemon should be mounting these devices for you.

do

"sudo ps -ef|grep -i hald"

anything?

I did not do anything. It started suddenly, i dont know why.
When i write the command u gave me i get : "hal 6831 1 0 15:00 ? 00:00:01 /usr/sbin/hald --drop-privileges"

Do you think i have to do an update? i am on Ubuntu Hoary 5.04.
Maybe a kernel update? i have 2.6.10-5-386. But how?

Thank you for your help...

ok on my system i get:

Code:

root      6582    1  0 12:48 ?        00:00:00 /usr/sbin/hald --daemon=yes --retain-privileges
root      6588  6582  0 12:48 ?        00:00:00 hald-addon-acpi
root      6595  6582  0 12:48 ?        00:00:00 hald-addon-storage
root      6598  6582  0 12:48 ?        00:00:00 hald-addon-storage
root      6848  6582  0 12:49 ?        00:00:00 hald-addon-storage

although it is slackware.....

you can upgrade if you like, but it's strange how it stopped working... you could always try upgrading to breezy.... that might fix it but u'd need broadband and it's hardly addressing what the problem actually is.....
