Problem with chroot'ed Ubuntu installation under SuSE 8.2

Hi to all. I've got some problems with my Ubuntu installation using chroot. Let me brief you about my system configuration first:

OS: SuSE 8.2
Computer: old Pentium I with 133 MHz, 17 GB SCSI HDD, 64 MB RAM.
Partitions: sda1 (SuSE 8.2, reiserfs)/4.9 GB, sda2 (swap)/128 MB, sda3 (Ubuntu base system, ext3)/9.8 GB, sda4 (none, ext3)/2.1 GB

A lot of this information is probably redundant but I need to get this installation done quickly...

I've been following the instructions on http ftp.ubuntulinux.org/ubuntu/dists/warty/main/installer-i386/current/doc/manual/en/apcs03.html to do the installation (sorry, I get a message that I can't post URLs until I have made at least 3 posts). I've installed the debootstrap debootstrap-udeb_0.3.3.0ubuntu2_i386.udeb and executed it with the command
$ /usr/sbin/debootstrap --arch i386 warty \
/mnt/ubuntu http archive.ubuntulinux.org/ubuntu
I've chroot'ed to /mnt/ubuntu and edited /etc/fstab
Now, the problem appears to be that my SuSE Kernel doesn't support sysfs. When I try mount -a, I get the following error:

mount: sys has wrong device number or fs type sysfs not supported

Does anyone know hoe to work around this? I don't have the possibility to do a CD based installation, so I think I have to use the chroot method.

Thanks in advance

SveTho

If the kernel doesn't support sysfs, recompile it with support.
