Problem reinstalling vmware-player

I have posted this on Ubuntu forums but drew a blank, so thought I'd try my luck here.

I'd been having crashing problems with VMplayer 1.0.4, so decided maybe a reinstall would fix it.

Tried to uninstall it and got the messages
"The following problems were found on your system"

"E: vmware-player: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should run 'dpkg --configure -a"

Well running dpkg --configure -a does not fix the problem.

if I try doing this via the command line (to get a more verbose output) I get

Code:
not fully installed or removed.
Need to get 0B/11.8MB of archives.
After unpacking 0B of additional disk space will be used.
Preconfiguring packages ...
Selecting previously deselected package vmware-player.
(Reading database ... 89130 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace vmware-player 1.0.1-4 (using .../vmware-player_1.0.1-4_amd64.deb) ...
/etc/init.d/vmware-player: line 171: vmware_product_name: command not found
Warning: Unable to find 's main database /etc/vmware/locations.

invoke-rc.d: initscript vmware-player, action "stop" failed.
dpkg: warning - old pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
dpkg - trying script from the new package instead ...
/etc/init.d/vmware-player: line 171: vmware_product_name: command not found
Warning: Unable to find 's main database /etc/vmware/locations.

invoke-rc.d: initscript vmware-player, action "stop" failed.
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/vmware-player_1.0.1-4_amd64.deb (--unpack):
subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
/etc/init.d/vmware-player: line 171: vmware_product_name: command not found
Warning: Unable to find 's main database /etc/vmware/locations.

invoke-rc.d: initscript vmware-player, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/vmware-player_1.0.1-4_amd64.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
My investigation so far have shown I have no "/etc/vmware/locations" directory, for whatever reason, so what ever its trying to find here will fail.

I'm unable to completely remove or reinstall it, I guess now its in such a state it'll have to be done by hand, but I'll need some guideance here, if anyone can spare the time.

Anyway how can I fix this and get the package reinstalled and working again.

Thanks

Thanks nosrednaekim, I have done that from synaptic, but again just gave me the errors above.
