Problem on booting

Hi folks,

Ubuntu-6.06-amd64

Freqently Firefox crashed and exited Gnome desktop to login page OR hung on screen forcing me to force-reset PC.

Now problem encounted on booting, popup warning to run "fsck".

I did;
# fsck /dev/hda
twice after login as root.

Each time I aswsered many questions and ended up with;

"fsck.ext2: e2fsck_read_bitmap: illegal bitmap block (15) for Root"

On reboot with "shutdown -r now" it was impossble booting straight to login screen. Each time requesting to run "fsck". After running it the same problem remained. However if ignoring the warning and pressing [Ctrl]+D, booting contiued to login page.

Please advise how to fix this problem. TIA

my guess is that it might be partition or hardware problem but if you got important data on that disk , probably you need to backup those data as much as possible , preferably doing it in windows if yours is a multiboot ...

"... and exited Gnome desktop to login page" this one is strange ... read the manpage for fsck and keep on troubleshooting if you dont have important data on it ...

Hi alred,

There was a warning;
Code:
.....
......
Home contains a file system with errors, check forced
Home
unattached inode 327787
.....
....
I have no idea how to get rid off it.

Remark: I have no important data on this HD. My target pursuing this problem is only for learning.

My suggestion is to run
Code:
$sudo dumpe2fs /dev/hda
and
Code:
$sudo badblocks /dev/hda
to see what's inside your disk/partition.

I agree with alred, probably it's time to backup important data from this disk/partition while you can still access it.

>> "unattached inode 327787"

probably thats a better error message ... keep on trying if theres no important data on it ...

Hi alred,

another warning found;
Code:
fsck.ext2:e2fsck_read_bitmaps:illegal bitmap blocks(s) for Root
Each time on booting, it asked to run "fsck". After finish rebooted PC it asked to run "fsck" again. If ignoring it and pressing [Ctrl]+d, then it continued to boot with login page started finally.
