There kind of problems are generated by several reasons.
1) You have a corrupted iso image, did you check this?
2) Your ram memory is too small, in that case you could try xubuntu
3) You use the wrong iso for your architecture?
...
Give details of your pc and iso image you tried to install, and we can get sorted your installation problems

thanks for your reply ...
- like i said in the topic i installed the system before..on the same ''laptop'' and it worked just fine...
but now the problem is like i said..so you can make sure the cd is ok...and i tested it on another pc yesterday and it worked...
- my ram memory is 256 ..but i dont think this is the problem coz it never showed any issues in the past expereinces...
- maybe iam using the wrong system ...i dont know
the thing is , i tried several other linux distros but only ubuntu (and ubuntu 7.04 only) works "fine" with my laptop...i mean i tried suse 10.1 ..but the graphics are too high ...maybe my VGA is too weak to support that kind of graphics...
- i did a test yesterday for my memory and it was full of error...to tell you the truth i dont know how to fix this ...so i did another test for my dvd reader drive...and i found some trouble with it too...the programs claims that it has fatal "steps" in reading cds and dvds ...i know that ..coz it makes noisy sounds when i insert any disk inside...
maybe this is the problem ...but you know laptops are hard to be hard ware ment...
here are my laptops details:
everex notebook pentium 4, intell
256 mh of ram
30 gb of harddisk
2500 mh processor speed
cd\dvd drive teac
graphic card up to 64....wow...maybe its 32 , i dont know
and thats about it...
waiting for a replay ...appreciate it

You can try to install in safe mode (i.e. not i graphic mode). You should find this option in the boot menu. If it fails at least you will have an output giving some details on the problem encountered. In that case you can post this output here.
I don't think is a CD issue given you installed ubuntu 5.01 without a problem.
Can you install ubuntu 6.10 as well? In that case you can update directly from the net.

What test? Memtest86? This sounds like a pretty serious problem you need to get taken care of, though I don't see why 5.10 would work if you had serious RAM problems.

Only solution to errors in memory is buying new memory and replacing it. It is possible that Xubuntu and 5.1 don't use as much ram as Ubuntu so don't hit the bad areas which may be at the upper range of the ram?
Anyway it is a pretty serious issue that will only get worse until you replace the ram. I would take it to a reputable small pc shop (not Circuit City/Best Buy/Staples or any other store like that).
