printer on usb not detected

I had my printer working OK on Ubuntu 64 bit version.(laptop 64bit amd Turion). I wanted to load another usb printer so deleted the usb printer I had working OK.

I used settings-peripherals-printers to get KDE printer control module

Now stuck cannot add/reload the USB I have now found that the wizard does not allow me to select the local usb printer which is ghosted out. I can load other printers from the local network over the ethernet but cannot figure out why the usb printer cannot be selected in the wizard.

Anyone, know what is causing this, or how to solve it.

In your internet browser go to http://localhost:631/ and see if you can set it up with that.

No you could not set it up there either. It is a complete lockout as it no longer detects the usb additions.

In mandrake 7001 a detection system is present and a warning comes up saying that an additional printer has been detected and gives the option of loading it. This works flawlessly and the printer is added.

There appears to be something missing in the Ubuntu 32 and 64 bit versions that does not do the auto printer usb detection.

Anyone know what it is as this is a real pain to recommend Ubuntu over Mandrake?

Can Ubuntu fix this problem in the update manager please?
