pressing 'x' in gnome terminal starts new terminal instance

Hello.

Whenever I'm typing in the Gnome terminal, and hit the letter x, I get a new terminal window. The original window is still there in the background. This only happens in the terminal with lowercase x, and within programs such as nano.

I have reinstalled the terminal packages through Synaptic but the problem still occurs.

I am running Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper, and recently used Automatix.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you checked the keybindings for Gnome Terminal?

Here's what to do:

1. Open Gnome Terminal.
2. Click "Edit" at the top of the window.
3. In the drop-down menu, click "Keyboard Shortcuts..."
4. A new window will pop up, with a list of shortcuts. The second one in the list is "New Window" (under the File category). Click the field for the "Shortcut Key" (right half of the list) and when you see "Type a new accelerator, or press Backspace to clear" push and hold the keys CTRL, SHIFT, and then N (all at once).
5. Click the "Close" button.
6. Try pushing "x" again.
7. If it still creates a new window, come back to LinuxQuestions and let us know!

That should do it, Drwfan54.
