powerpc: kernel patching... but which kernel source?

Hi All,

I'm new to kernel patching (anything kernel for that matter) and want to try patching the kernel on my etch for powerpc. I went to but am unsure if I need kernel patches specific for powerpc or not. Please help a newbie and point me in the right direction. I'm currently at: 2.6.17-10

 sudo apt-get install linux-source
That will download the source as "/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.17.tar.bz2"
You just extract it from there and you'll get the source.

Thanks. Since I want to do the patch manually for learning purposes, I'm hoping that it will only download the file and let me do the rest.

Thanks Again,
