popup notifications are white on black and very, very small

I recently installed Mate 1.8.1 on Ubuntu 1404.1. Everything works fine, but I noticed that the little popup notifications, such as from the panel weather applet, or from my printer are black with white print, and the font size is not friendly to my 71 year-old eyes. Always before, dating back to the last Ubuntu which used Gnome 2.xx, Ubuntu 1004, through all of the Linux Mint releases, using Mate DE, including the latest, Linux Mint 17.1 with Mate 1.8.1, those popup notifications were black on white. I did find in System>Preferences>Popup Notifications controls for where the notice might appear, but nothing for fonts or background.
My choices are to either live with the ugly white-on-black-microscopically-small-fonts, or to disable notifications on both the panel weather applet and the HP Status applet preferences, or, hopefully, find help changing this vexing little problem.

Many thanks to whomever chooses to respond.

Perhaps using LM would be a better fit for you.

"Perhaps using LM would be a better fit for you." widget
I'm running on Ubuntu MATE to test it for potential long-term use. Surely something as minute as changing background color and font size is fixable. But, fixable or not, it probably does not qualify as a deal breaker. If I ran away from every problem I encountered, I wouldn't survive long.

Thanks for your reply, but I'm hoping for a suggestion which might help me actually fix this problem rather than point out directions to the exit. I'm looking for the set of instructions for popups which tell them how to behave and what they should look like. There I might edit the colors, fonts, etc.

Here is a fairly detailed discussion of the problem -
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopi...f=206&t=136673

There is a program available, via PPA, which might work for you, if the previous discussion did not -

Below are the exchanges between username "infirit" and myself on the ubuntu-mate forum;

Can you post a screen-shot of it?

It may be that two notifications daemons are installed at the same time and the original gnome one (notification-daemon) is getting the messages first. Check if you have both mate-notification-daemon and notification-daemon installed.

Attached is the default notification bubble for mate-notification-daemon nd as mentioned before the text size changes based on what the application font is set to.

Thanks, infirit. I'll boot back into my installation of ubuntu-mate in a few minutes, and check this out. I'll post back with my results.

Thanks, again.

Ahh! Problem solved! I noticed on your screenshot, infirit, that the theme was "Standard Theme." And I recalled that the only themes I had were Nodoka, Slider, and Coco. So, after booting into Ubuntu MATE, I first checked to see if there was 'notification-daemon' as well as 'mate-notification-daemon' installed.... nope, just the 'mate-notification-daemon.' I then renamed /usr/lib/mate-notification-daemon to /usr/lib/mate-broke-notification-daemon, and, using synaptic, reinstalled mate-notification-daemon. Eureka! Popup Notifications now has all four themes, including "Standard Theme," and the popups are the typical popups.

Thanks for the screenshot. That led me to the solution.

So, problem solved! And thanks to all who responded. And thanks to "infirit" from the other forum for his screenshot which led to the solution of the problem. I can now continue testing Ubuntu-MATE along side of Linux Mint 17.1 with Mate. Both are very responsive, nimble, and the desktops look and feel like traditional computers did ten years ago, except much more reliable.
