The easiest and, probably, safest way would be to upgrade your OS to 10.10.
You could also change the name of your /etc/apt/sources.list to sources.list.old and then create a new one that calls on just;
Code:
deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick main
deb-src http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick main
You could leave out the src source if you don't intend to use it.
Then;
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Do not upgrade. Turn down the option to do so or you will be upgrading your system partially with fatal results. You need that list.
Run;
Code:
sudo apt-get install <package>
<package> being replaced with the new kernel.
Change back to your old sources.list.
You could go to the package listing for that kernel (run a search) in Ubuntu. Download all needed packages and install with gdebi. This would mean you wouldn't need to mess with your sources.list.
