X Northern Captain is an excellent double-paned, multi-window file manager. While not specifically directed at Gnome or Ubuntu, it is in the Synaptic repo (listed as "XNC"). I find the current "build" version works quite well.

You can help me learn if I am doing things right, by telling me, if you recall, if after the install, I will find a menu or desktop reference to it, or if I have to look, and if so, where will it end up?
I think I am getting somewhere, but I still haven't broken away from the old way of thinking.... :-)
