Playing VCDs

I am unable to play any VCDs on my maverick installaton, I have xine , Gnome Mplayer, VLC and UBUNTU restricted extras installed. But when ever I try to open a VCD in them they just dont play it.
GMplayer displays 26 files and starts playing The first one but never does,
Movieplayer just plays the first intro track and that is it.

VLC never loads them , saying unable to read.

Note: the files have a .dat extension on the Disk.

What version of Ubuntu are you using?

Make sure you have the w32 codecs (or the w64 codecs if you are using 64 bit Ubuntu) installed. You can get these codecs from the medibuntu repository: http://medibuntu.org/repository.php
See this: http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/open...es-ubuntu.html
Also make sure you have all those gstreamer plugins installed.

You can also convert .dat files to .avi. See this: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-886418.html
Hope this helps. I have no direct experience with this issue. I found those links with a search.
