Picture screensaver and odd results

A bit back the "Pictures" folder used by the screen saver disappeared. I created a new one, and since I had the files backed up, I put my series of pictures in.

But since then in screen saver mode a tremendous variety of pictures are showing up. Some from web pages I have looked at, some from another folder where I store personal fotos, some from pdf files I have looked at, and some I have no idea where they came from... and of course some from my Pictures folder.

This is not a "serious" problem, but I am left very curious as to what happened, or how to correct the situation.... if there is a correction.

Anyway, any comments or solutions would be very welcome.

José

Is this xscreensaver you are running? There are options on the 'Advanced' tab to do just what you describe.

I'm running a different distro, so the directories may be a little different. On my system, there is a config directory at /usr/share/xscreensaver/config. In that directory is the config file along with a README file that tells you all about how to config and control xscreensaver.

I opened a terminal, did a 'locate xscreensaver' and found the config files.

If you are not running xscreensaver, what program is it?

Thanks for getting back on my question. I did a xscreensaver locate and found a list of some 100 files!

I noticed a couple of "readme" files and the configuration file. So when I get a bit of time I will explore them and see what I can see. Will eventually get back with a "solved" or not.

Thanks,

José

OK... it looks like I might have found the problem.

In the list of config files, one for each screen saver choice, the "Pictures folder" file does not exist. Nothing listed that even looks like it.

Sooo... it makes sense that without a config file the function can do what it wants!

Does that sound right?

That could be right, I have never tried to see what the program will do missing things.

You can try and run the program with 'xscreensaver-demo' ( without the quotes ). This will bring up a panel you can configure the program through. There is an advanced tab, click it, and you can point it at a 'picture' directory, a directory of your files you want to display while things are locked up.

You can find more help here -->http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/man.html

I'm running Mandriva, the default install did not install all screensaver options that are available. I had to install more packages. I search the package manager for 'xscreensaver' and installed what I found. Now I have many more choices.

Thanks Cliff. I think that I have gotten about as far as I can with this... and in the process have learned something!
