pcmcia whireless...

Hey all

I just bought a new wireless router and got the house connected up including my linux laptop (which i have also just recently installed kubuntu)

anyway the pcmcia wireless card was working fine, well that is until i did an:

Code:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
after that it was working for a while while i downloaded some codecs so that i could play some vids etc.

i then rebooted the machine and when i booted up again... NO WIRELESS

i have plugged it into the router with though ethernet but and tried the upgrade and even dist-upgrade to no avail

now what?

Thanks
Gray

I'm guessing that when you updated, some config files got over written or changed and the wireless is no longer configured at boot. Can you bring it up manually?

If you issue commands along the lines of these, you should see if there is a problem and where it is:

Code:
modprobe <wireless driver module>
ifconfig eth1 up
iwconfig eth1
dhclient eth1
Replace eth1 with your wireless interface name and if dhclient doesn't work, try 'dhcpcd eth1'. If that all works and gives you a connection, its just a matter of getting it to do it at boot.

If it doesn't work then please post the output of all commands.

The output is
wlan0: error fetching interface information: Device not found

For modprob i am not sure what the wireless driver module is called :-/

Since the upgrade the system doesn't even see the wireless card
I tried removing and re-adding the pcmcia driver but didnt work.

Also in the system services the pcmcia device is off, i have tried starting it but it doesnt start.
I get a popup window that sais done but not actually starting

Thanks or the help so far

Ok so i took the easy way (kinda) out and re-installed it.

Now i am to paranoid to do an update. I have that little icon telling me i have like 105 updates and not sure whether to install them. well actually i must install them...
Is there a way that i can make sure it will work after i update?

I have also looked in the system services list and the pcmcia service is 'not running' and 'no' for start on boot.
however while booting it says starting pcmcia blah blah ........ OK

all very strange.

Hope someone can give me an explanation for some of this and what i can do about updating my system without loosing my connection

Ta
