Packaging Binaries

Recently while playing around with the Ubuntu FAQ (the new offical one) there was an entry about creating a DEB package from Java binaries (link) I really liked this idea and wanted to know if there's a way to easily do it with other binary packages such as a flash player or a non-debian compatible app.

Debian has a package called Alien which changes rpms tar & slackware packages to debs and installs them.I havent tried it yet.

I didn't know alien also changed slackware packages. It's a good program but not universal. It wont convert all rpms and tgzs to deb packages.
