Question package error: ctr1.o missing?

I am a fairly new linux user (but an experienced s/w guy). I have Ubuntu Edgy Eft, brand spanking new install. I am trying to build a package to install Subversion. When I run ./configure, the log tells me that ctr1.o is missing. Here is the actual text verbatim from the log file.

usr/bin/ld: crt1.o: No such file: No such file or directory

Indeed the file does not exist on my system. This really smacks of something absolutely simple but I can't figure out what I'm missing. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Thanks!

Without knowing what you are trying to compile it's hard to tell, but the file 'crt1.o' is in the package libc6-dev
