Only 2 of 4 usb ports recognized
I've installed Edgy on a friend's computer and everything works fine except Edgy only activates 2 out of 4 usb ports. The ones directly connected to the mobo work, the ones connected with a header cable on the mobo do not function, yet they work under Windows XP SP2 so it can't be a faulty cable configuration...
The chipset is a VIA VT82C686B South Bridge. Here's the dmesg output:
Code:
[17179578.584000] uhci_hcd 0000:00:07.2: UHCI Host Controller

[17179579.224000] usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
The way I interpret this is that it does see both USB controllers but for some reason it only activates 1...
Any ideas? I already added acpi=noirq to the boot parameters but no go. In the bios P&P OS setting Y/N doesn't make a difference either.
Many thanks!

Plug something into the USB ports you think aren't working and run lsusb in a terminal window. IMHO it gives a better view of whats working in USB. Here's a sample of my desktop box.
fragos@Geo:~$ lsusb

That's the problem: only the ports on the mainboard recognize & show devices, the others stay dead and give the dreaded ID 0000:0000 when plugging in a device (tested with a wireless USB stick, a USB printer & a removeable hard drive).
Also dmseg | tail & /var/log/messages do not report anything when plugging something into the 3rd & 4th port.

Do you have a mixture of USB1 and USB2 ports?
They each require different modules to be loaded, but I am not at linux right now, and can't remember what they're called! (?"ehci" / "uhci" -something like that?). What's the output of lsmod | grep usb ?

No they're both USB 1 integrated on the motherboard. One set of ports is directly on the motherboard, the other is made available through header pins which you connect cables to.
I'm not at the pc atm so I'll ask my friend to post the output tonight.

I'd check the cable from the front ports to the mobo. It only connects to a pin header. perhaps it has become dislodged or the cable has a break. The USB drivers that load by default work for all versions of USB devices. "lspci |grep USB" will show multiple 1.1 controllers and one 2.0. Don't be concerned, 2.0 works on all ports.

As a point of reference here's my output for the same commands. I have a lot more drivers loaded but that may relate to a large number of USB devices: Wacom tablet, mouse, Card reader (internal header), Bluetooth dongle and HP printer. I also have a USB keyboard but that connected with an adapter to a PS2 port. All except rfcomm and l2cap are automatically loaded. Is this an older box? Some early providers of USB were pre-standards and didn't work right when the real standards came out. I had a Compaq 4770 that had that problem but I never ran Linux on it and don't know how it would have responded to these commands. Could you provide the make and model of components or the entire system? That may help us find a diagnosis.
