NVIDIA driver Xconfig problems
I have installed the latest driver for the NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+. I started x back and this caused on reboot it would only display on low graphics mode....I could not configure the nvidiax-server file and would not allow me to change the graphics or anything of that nature. here is what all I have tried so far:
stoping x and installing the drivers
restarting x and then rebooting...can only be done in low graphics mode you must reconfigure the x-server file etc etc...and will not allow me to actually edit that file

That should work, I had no trouble getting it to work for my nvidia 9600, which uses the same driver package. But why not use the driver from the repository? The 9xxx series was not supported on Hardy unless you used the envy package but on Ibex it should work fine.

Then you could use a combination of sudo nvidia-xconfig and sudo nvidia-settings.
Btw, you did not answer my question whether you are using the pre-packaged driver from the repository.

I have the NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org 'new' driver (version 169) working on Hardy but do not have envyng installed. I had a few issues getting Compiz to work until I installed the Linux Restricted Modules packages.
