No Sound - Amarok

I upgraded Ubuntu today, since the upgrade I'm getting no sound from Amarok. I've also got songbird on my system and that is working fine so the problem seems to be program specific. Any ideas?

Apologies, I've just found the solution, it had changed the output plugin, I've changed it back to alsa and it's working fine.

Actually I still need help.

I'm getting no sound from avi files, video is fine. I'm assuming it's something to do with a codec, but can't for the life of me work it out.

From what I've read I can start VLC from the command line and that would give you some useful info to the problem, but I don't know the command.
