no net in Ubuntu 9.10
 

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 on one HD. Now I have no internet with 9.10. The dsl connection I used to upgrade is still there, the password is correct, but it can't connect to the net, and always falls back to AutoEth0.

Anyone know how to get me connected again?

I would like to know why the network manager is not doing its job. I also run Fedora 12. The gnome network manager works fine. I have three connections, Library, Home, and Mobile3G. In Network manager I have all three saved, with their relevant data. Fixed IP wired connection in the library, dsl at home and mobile or dsl for Mobile3G. Now, the whole point of Network Manager is to allow easy switching from one to the other. But it won't work in Ubuntu 9.10. Works fine in Fedora. Worked fine in Ubuntu 9.04. I uninstalled Gnome network manager and tried WICD. But it too has no possibility to configure pppoe. I can connect in the Library. I have Debian 5.0 on an external drive. I have never been able to connect to dsl with it. Only ever in the Library. Is this lack of dsl a Debian thing?

What is going on here?

I followed all the instructions in the link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ADSLPPPoE but still cannot connect to my home dsl using Ubuntu 9.10 It says it is connected, but cannot access anything.

Before I upgraded to 9.10, I just switched networks using Gnome Network Manager. It had a tab for dsl connections. Enter username and password, and done. 9.10 doesn't have this. Why not?? That is not an upgrade it's a downgrade.

Why? doesn't WICD handle pppoe? Works fine here in the library with a fixed ip connection.

I just want my dsl connection at home to work with Ubuntu. Any more tips?

When you say it can't access anything do you mean you cannot open any sites in the browser? Have you tried pinging the other machines? Have you tried pinging your default gateway? Do you have a router that you use to connect with?

I have a dsl connection, a white thingy plugged into the telphone socket in the wall. It has sockets for three computers and one for internet TV.

My problem is simple: I use gnome network manager, for example now, in Fed 12. If I right click the two monitors symbol in the task bar at the top, I can choose 'edit connections'. There I can choose a tab 'dsl' To create a new network connection, just enter a valid username and password, and give the connection a name. Done. Exactly the same in Ubuntu 9.04. But, after the upgrade to 9.10, the network manager does not have this dsl tab. That is not my definition of an upgrade. Someone for some reason has removed the dsl part of the package. Why, God only knows. WICD will not handle dsl. I read that on their web site. So here I am with 9.10 installed, but can only connect in the library, where I have a fixed ip wired connection.

I followed the instructions in the link above to no avail. My only hope is, the Ubuntu Gods will have fixed this in 10.04. When I finally get the upgrade downloaded, maybe the dsl tab will have reappeared in Gnome nm. Hope so. I did not try to ping anything. If I have connection, why should the browser not be able to connect to a web site?

As I said, Gnome nm works just fine in Fed, now.

I am using the latest 32-bit version of Ubuntu 10.10. I went to bed last night and had a wireless internet connection with my Toshiba A215-S7437. It was working great when I shut it off. I cut it back on this morning and no internet...neither wireless nor wired. I tried pinging my router...nothing. The wireless card and the wired connection [eth0] are apparently activated but no connection. Cannot even connect to router at the address of "192.168.0.1" under Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat/10.10. I know it is a software problem as the hardware is working great under Windoze Vista on my dual-boot system. It is working fine under Windoze Vista...as I am typing this right now this minute under Windoze Vista and no problems surfing the net. Any ideas?...I'm thinking Network Manager has a problem as I updated my software yesterday.

Yeah, but what problem? And how to get round it? I mean, why is yours gone? Why don't I have dsl? pppoeconf finds eth0 quickly, and goes through the motions, but does not connect. Quote Gnome Network Manager 'make connecting to the internet easy from anywhere'

I have cable internet, with a cable modem, through Cox Communications. I use the newest 32-bit version of Ubuntu 10.10, Maverick Meerkat. I know that it is a beta version of Ubuntu 10.10. I rebooted my router and Windoze Vista can still access the router through the web browser. Also my internet before was DSL with NO problems unless I used a beta version of Ubuntu at the time and I have had this laptop for 2 1/2 years. I am going to reboot into Ubuntu again to see if rebooting the router helped. The router is about to become 1 year old next week and it might be time to replace the router with a new one. They seem to last a year. Maybe replace the cable modem...it is the same age. I bought them the same day this time last year.

But if it works with Windoze, then there is nothing wrong with the hardware. I'm writing this in Fed, and have no probs! Don't go buying new stuff you don't need. Modems are robust!

Network Manager, especially in the 9.04/9.10 series, is very buggy when it comes to wireless security. I have tried to use the wireless on my Acer Aspire One AOA110-1545 netbook with 9.04 Netbook Remix. It connected at first, but then it suddenly stopped working after a few connections. This bug has been fixed in the Lucid Lynx for the most part, and in my case it works fine with THAT version. Try it and see what happens.

It's the white thingy that has my interest.....look on the bottom for model name and number.Go to your browser and type the address 192.168.01 and see if it brings up an interface to it. Maybe there it will give you some information.The usual login is name:admin / password:admin.
