No moreLogin screen

I tried to install XGL and my login screen dissappeared. It looks like its about to work, then it goes to the command line login. After a couple of tries, it tells me that something was wrong in X, it asks me if i want to view the log and when i try to, its just messed up junk. I then login through the command line. To get it working again, all i have to do is "startx" and everything works fine. I also cant shutdown anymore. Im not really sure this is the right way to do it, but i was doing "sudo shutdown now" it then does some normal shutdown stuff then wants my to hid CTRL D or put in the root password. Whatever i do, it just restarts the shutdown process and gets into and endless loop. Normally i would reinstall, but im on a trip and dont have anyway to burn it again or get my original copy. I have the dapper and an inspiron 8600 if it matters. Thanks in advance.

Maybe when you get into X, look at your Login Window settings in System >> Administration >> Login Window
