No external sound - UBUNTU 9.10

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

kernel: 2.6.31-16-generic

Toshiba A205-S5800

Background: With an earlier version of Ubuntu (think it was 7.04) I had the problem of no sound on the external speaker, only earphones. With a later update the external speakers worked but
without much volume. With 9.10 everthing worked but the external volume was still low.
About a week ago there was an update. After load the speakers were loud and clear and neither had
a hiss or hickup. Then yet another update comes yesterday and I now have a severe HISSssss on my
earphones and no external speakers again. After reading some blogs I checked the front setting and
found [MM] there - was hopeful - but after hitting "M" and changing to "00" and adjusting the
level still the same problem with or with out a reboot. I'm stumped. I don't know that to install or
deinstall. Need some help.

Here are the current mixer settings and observations:

1.As soon as I move [Master] off [MM], both [headphone] and [PCM] jump into the red <Headphon= db gain=-9.00, -9.00> <PCM= db gain=-0.20, -0.20>.
2.The [Front] goes to the [MM] on every reboot. Changes to these settings makes no change in the speaker problem.

Finally, I am up to date on all releases which leads me to believe that something in the last 2 releases caused the problem.

So that's the story....

Thanks in advance,
Eddie

I suppose that your trying alsamixer to change those volume levels, but then the new Ubuntu 9.10 makes full use of PulseAudio. Did you try using the available graphical interfaces for volume controle and properties?
You mentioned last couple versions... did you try Ubuntu 9.04?

Since PulseAudio came as the default audio player in Ubuntu, I have been removing it and installing OSS4 to get perfect audio, and full control of my audio boards. ossxmix that comes with it lets you set EVERY option you can find in you audio board for each output and input possible.

I would go with Ubuntu 9.04 and OSS4 for the most stable sound/voice experience.
