I have a really old HP USB CD/DVD optical drive that seems to works better then almost any internal drive....

Ubuntu did not have any problems with recognizing a movie DVD or playing it using vlc using the USB drive. I am not sure whether it is a hardware or software problem at the moment.

I didn't test this drive first. I have others, I will swap in my best drive, and try again,

I have made some progress.
After reading man pages and log files and asking elsewhere, I finally just gave up and installed yet another DVDROM.
I reset the BIOS and (for now) it is not a boot device.

Upon rebooting VLC will recognize DVD discs! It will show a play list!

It tries to play but reports:

Code:
Playback failure:
DVDRead could not read -1/4 blocks at 0x01.

Did you do the obvious? Put in another DVD disc, preferably one that contains computer files.
I have encountered a DVD drive that could not read DVDs but could read CDs, so I assume the red laser has died.

Since I couldn’t get the blu-ray working, I tried the DVD drives too, but eventually I hooked up the external blu-ray player instead.
