If you have a reasonably good internet connection, then just get the CD version. You can get everything else through the package manager.

I consider the DVD to be for installs without internet (I work on boats).
Debian and Ubuntu have this awesome built in feature of the installer: it installs the newest versions off the internet if possible, instead of what's on the CD. So the DVD just has MORE outdated packages than the CD.
But it is cool as a live-cd!

Does the DVD version include all the packages in the synaptic package manager?

If you want to _function_ in a live-cd environment, go with Knoppix. It's simply boots faster.
But Ubuntu is most certainly were to land (install and live with)! Glad you like it.
If your machine has a lot of RAM (>700MB) try knoppix with 'toram' appended to the boot line. It loads the whole compressed cd to RAM and runs from there, ejecting the CD. You can self burn knoppix cd's from there. b)

Go ahead and install it. Then, think of someone you know that would most likely also have their socks blown off by the DVD and make sure you hand it to that person. Spread the love, there is a lot of FUD out there to counter it.

To DVD, or to CD, that is the question...
It all depends on bandwidth. If you have DSL that is slower, then I would go with the CD. If you have the faster DSL or cable, then you might want to try the DVD. For instance, I have the slow DSL connection, and it takes me about 6-8 hours to download the CD. The DVD takes a little over a day. Hope this helps you make a decision!

There is a gui tool in the knoppix menu that downloads and installs it.
You _still_ can't distribute the flash codec! You have to download and accept the agreement.
"sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree" will get it for you as well.

Sigh, Suse is still my first choice, i decided to use ubuntu with DVD, i installed Suse 10.3 into my HDD. KDE is better than Gnome.
actually all linuxes are the same, similar packages available,Suse is just a perfect choice for me,Fedora is the worst!

Well, that's why Mark Shuttleworth mhimself runs 'kubuntu'.
Also, to 'upgrade' to KDE one needs ONLY to:
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
That's it. kubuntu installed. b)
