new to ubuntu lots of questions breezy 5.10
 

Just recieved my new ubuntu breezy badger 5.10
why did they do this to us.

first thing is when I boot into recovery mode I get root privilages but no vertual consoles with my f keys I just get a blank screen with a blinking - is there anyway to resolve this or is it a bug in the program or what?

next there is no midnight commander anymore very sad does anyone know whare I could get a version of glib source that compiles on ubuntu that will also work with a version of the commander source that will also compile on ubuntu, and probably a version of ncurses also. I have been comming up empty on my serches for glib 1.2.6 that commander needs seems I dont have the right version of the rpm 3 or somthing that its asking for so I can not unpack it. would rather have simple tar.gz files. also the ones I have been down loading are corrupt or somthing any help would be greatly appresiated I believe the midnight commander is indispensible for working with the console I realy would miss it thanks in advance

It's not a bug. It's called recovery mode because it's supposed to help you recovery from something you messed up. Logging in as root temporarily gives you the ability to do that, especially if your /etc/sudoers file has become corrupt somehow.

For regular use (including all the F-key virtual consoles), just boot into the regular kernel--not recovery mode.

am I understanding you here I dont see breezy 5.10 in your list of versions. I figured it was some where but why didnt they include the commander in breezy 5.10 I thought it was supposed to be part of a standard distro at least its been in every one that I have ever dealt with or did I get a bum disk. I cant find it anywhere in the pool I also used dselect and could not find it with that either. as for the F key consoles why not just put them in there its already half there why not just enable it. More convenient in my opinion

Read it again. I'll highlight it for you this time: See? Version 4.6.0 is in the Breezy Universe repository. Version 4.6.1 is in the Breezy-backports Universe repository. Let me repeat: It's there! It's there in normal mode. Why would you want to boot into recovery mode unless you're trying to repair your installation? Just boot into normal mode. All the virtual consoles are there.

are we talking about repositorys on the internert or on the cdrom disk I still cant find mc on my cdrom disk that was mail to me

booting into recovery mode is faster and more convienent to get things done without the fus and frustration of su everything I guess I am not used to that part of the new model I really liked the root command line idea guess it will take some getting used to.... I heard there is a way to configure it the old way but have not got it quite yet

BTW why does 5.10 not work with partition magic 8.0 the default partitioner wants to erase my whole hard drive it does not see my partitions or will refuse to install. when I install it as the main os parition magic cant see the drives not a very well behaved program. sides I realy dont like that very confuseing instalation partitioner and I still can not get my modem to work it sees that it is there but will not dial it I now its the driver why is there not one

On the internet. The Universe repositories on not the on CD-ROM. In fact, very little is on the CD-ROM. If you don't have an internet connection, Ubuntu is going to be painful. I would advise using Debian or Mandriva instead.

That suprises me I thought origionaly partition magic was suposed to suport linux it works with all my old linux's and windows 98 and 2000

guess I am finding out how painfull ubunto is I cant mount its partition from my old debian 2.2.12 without it creating major errors. When I reboot it has to do a file system check before booting. very unfortunat its not a bad looking desktop just very unruley guess thats why they are giveing it away I sure would never pay for somthing like this

BTW how do I get back to the graphical desk top after exiting it I used ctrl + alt + f3 but when I startx it gives me an error I cant remember exactly wht is then back to the prompt is there another way

can I ask if most of the other new distros are going to this same model or way of doing the linux thing or is it specific to ubuntu. I guess what I am trying to say is will there be any effort to backwords compatibility

I'm not sure what you mean about backwards compatibility, but not every distro is so heavily reliant on the internet. For example, Debian has about 14 CDs that you can either order (for money) to be shipped to you or that can be downloaded and burnt on another computer that does have internet.

Mandriva also has a number of add-on CDs (I don't think it's 14, though--three...?).

well what I mean is that I cant install my old midnight comander on the new ubuntu even though they are both deb the old works a little but it gets quite wiged out and I cant mount ubuntu from my old system without createing errors. I am not sure at the moment what else does not work right from one to the other?

I can get my old system set up on my celeron 1.2 ghz 250 mg ram in about 5 minuts. I have my command line and compiler and tools and can be ready to do some serious work! with this ubuntu I have to go through there god aufull installation process and it takes about an hour and i still dont have what I need to work with. It does not find my modem which has always been a problem with linux anyway but that aside I am wondering if I should even mess with this any more?

BTW I did get it to work with my partition magic what I did was not install the grub boot loader but the intallation did not ask to make a boot disk it went ahead with the install so what I have is a partition with ubuntu on it that is unbootable. I find I dont like grub becouse in my experience so far once it is in the hd0 mbr I cant get it out completely without fdisk and format. Maybe it is becouse I dont know how to use grub but I have found it to be quite messy lilo is a little more well behaved.

Anyway, now what I have to do is find a way to set the boot flag on the partition so that I can boot into it from the boot manager which is the power quest boot manager which has worked quite well for me.

any ideas?

like is ther a way to make a boot disk from the instalation cd without going through the whole blessed thing again it keeps wanting to format the hard drive first I does not let me jump to another part ot the installation it did when i intalled it first but it does not now.

It seems to me you're fighting with Ubuntu.

If you were content to install Grub to the MBR and use the current version of Midnight Commander instead of the old one, I'm sure you'd have an easier time of it.

I have no experience with boot floppies, but maybe these links will help. It sounds to me, though, as if Ubuntu's not your cup of tea. Try Mandriva. It has multiple disks and uses Lilo by default.

then whats the perpose of this operateing system distrobution then a bunch people trying to dictate to the rest of us how we are going to use our computers I think that goes against what the fsf really stands for in my opinion! and that make this distro no better than MICROSOFT if your going to ditch everything that went before and redo it just for whatever i think is stupid.
