I just installed my first copy of Ubuntu for the first time and i dont know what are the things that i should update.

can any one tell me what they do on there boxes when they first install Ubuntu

I haven't used ubuntu in a while, but that's pretty much the gist of it. You might want to enable some additional repositories, such as medibuntu.

Keep a eye on those icons/buttons up the top of the screen, usually on the RHS of the title bar.

any notices of updates, & other stuff, usually appear there.

then just click on them, to get them to work.

Here is a good resource for making an install that will do just about anything you want. You don't necessarily have to install all the programs in the tutorial, but I find it to be a good list to go by. Hope it helps, and good luck! :)
