Need to force specific X driver in Hardy

Hi, I've recently installed ubuntu hardy heron on an old machine I have, but X is running extremely slowly. I think its because X is using some sort of framebuffer driver, instead of the correct one. I tried manually editing xorg.conf, but there doesn't seem to be anything to change in there. I know that I need the "ati" x.org driver in order to fully support this card.

Please note, I am NOT trying to get 3D working or anything, I only want the open source ati driver. This card is an integrated rage 128, so even with 3D it won't do much

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks, but that driver doesn't support my hardware. My hardware is too old. I was just looking to use the standard, open source, ati driver.

I even have the driver I want installed, but ubuntu keeps using some sort of framebuffer driver instead.

What I need to know is how do I tell ubuntu what driver to use, if I can't do it in xorg.conf anymore?
