Need help with updating old Xubuntu box

1) How do I backup everything, so that if the apt-get upgrade throws me into a tty terminal without an Internet driver and graphics card driver that I can restore things before it all?
current:
Code:
Linux universe 3.13.0-32-generic #57-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jul 15 03:51:12 UTC 2014 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux
I won't be able to have a lice-cd or live-usb situation. So, I would be trying to do a restore with the HDD while using the HDD.

2) Does the current trust Xubuntu support this graphics and ethernet?
Code:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE/PE DRAM Controller/Host-Hub Interface (rev 03)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 03)
00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 02)
00:1d.1 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 02)
00:1d.2 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 02)
00:1d.7 USB controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-M) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 02)
00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev 82)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL (ICH4/ICH4-L) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 02)
00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801DB (ICH4) IDE Controller (rev 02)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) SMBus Controller (rev 02)
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)
02:02.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8100/8101L/8139 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (rev 10)
02:0a.0 Communication controller: LSI Corporation LT WinModem (rev 02)
3) Is there a way I can get the version of Xubuntu I'm using to let me make a Xubuntu or Ubuntu live-usb with persistent storage? I got another box that can use Ubuntu. I need to know how to make the live-usb with the box I'm using at the moment, though. So, I don't know what I would need for the kernel and version I'm using and the extent of which version of UBuntu or xubuntu I can use. I reason due to using an old version of xubuntu, I would be limited to only using the version of xubuntu i'm using at most for the live-usb.

Code:
cat /etc/issue
should cover that.

Unetbootin should be in synaptic package manager in xubuntu.

Here is what I'm using:
Quote:
workstation@universe:~$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS \n \l
I googled some about the realtek ethernet, but only PCI was listed as not working. The ethernet is part of the motherboard, so I don't know of it as being a PCI device. The ethernet card is not considered a PCI device if it's on a mobo, right?

Anyone with more skill might be able to tell me if the ethernet port will still work if I apt-get update.

I'm reading this:http://www.pendrivelinux.com/using-u...sb-from-linux/

Can I make a xubuntu-15.10-desktop-i386 live-usb with the Xubuntu I'm using?

I'm not clear on what you want. It seems you want to remaster your current install and create an iso file of it to use to put on a usb, is that correct? If so, I don't know any software that will do that although something may exist. Remastersys did it but it's not been developed for several years so I doubt it would work. If you just want to create a bootable usb with persistence, you can use unetbootin for that. Just download the Xubuntu iso and run unetbootin. You can clone partitions or entire drives with clonezillaa but you can't clone an entire drive to the drive you are cloning from.
