Need an antivirus for Ubuntu
 

Ok before you all go like, "Y do you need an antivirus for Ubuntu" I want to tell you it is not for Ubuntu. I want it to scan my windows partition From Ubuntu. I have downloaded many files which i still havent run on windows. I want to scan them first because I dont trust the source.
I dont want to use antivirus on windows because it somewhat makes my system slow on startup and also while running. It should scan for exe files. Is there any software which scans exe for viruses?

I did search for antivirus on google which all came out with zero infections in results, but still i need to be sure. If any one of you have used antivirus please help me. Thank you in advance.

You're not using anit-virus on Windows?!?
 

It really makes me sad to think that you'd be foolhardy enough to run Windows without active anti-virus software. In this day and age, your Windows system can be infected within minutes of being connected to the Internet. Why take the risk?

As for the meat of your question, I recommend ClamAV for Ubuntu. You can install the on demand scanning component by itself and then just run it whenever you want to scan. Or you can make a cron job to run clamscan at convenient times of your choosing.

In general, with ubuntu, if you are looking for a type of software, try opening up synaptic and entering the type as a search term. There's a very good chance there's something you can use in the repos.

Then be sad for me, or my girlfriend, too. :)

She runs the only "Winders" (2k SP4) box in the household & there is no AV installed on it. Maybe Moon Secure AV or Spyware Terminator in the future.


Let's make that: "your unpatched Windows system can be infected within minutes of being directly (i.e. no gateway, router, or firewall) connected to the Internet.

The point being that there was a time, e.g. before XP SP2, when a new XP box could be compromised before it could d/l the needed security patches. Pre-installing (or slipstreaming) SP2, patching from a local source, & connecting through a gateway firewall have all but eliminated this problem.


What risk? ;) -- I believe that the only "security" problems I can remember are tracking cookies. The last virus I recall happened when she was running 98 SE behind an SMC Barricade 7008BR.

I agree with Rick above.

With a good firewall and some dicipline you should be ok using just clam from ubuntu.

Maybe also consider using email only from within Ubuntu, although I guess many ISPs have good scanning of incomming emails these days.

I would like to know if there is an anti virus program I can use while using a live CD in order to check a windows hard drive, for the most part I use Puppy or knoppix to check on these Derives

There is Knoppix-STD, which is a specialized live CD based on Knoppix which has a lot of security tools, including Clam AV:
