Nautilus backgrounds
 

Using the default Nautilus on Hoary 5.0.4.

According to the Nautilus Help page, you are supposed to be able to change the background image/colors of Nautilus. BTW, I'm using Nautilus in browser mode.

Changing Backgrounds

The file manager includes backgrounds that you can use to change the look-and-feel of the following screen components:

* Desktop
* Side pane and view pane of file browser windows
* File object windows
* Panels

To change the background of a screen component perform the following steps:

1. Choose Edit → Backgrounds and Emblems. The Backgrounds and Emblems dialog is displayed.
2. To display a list of patterns that you can use on the background, click on the Patterns button. To display a list of the colors that you can use on the background, click on the Colors button.
3. To change the background to a pattern, drag the pattern to the screen component. To change the background to a color, drag the color to the screen component.
4. Click Close to close the dialog.

To reset the background of the view pane or side pane to the default background, right-click on the background of the pane, then choose Use Default Background.

When I drag a background or a color to either the side panel or the view pane, Nautilus will not accept it. Has anybody been successful in doing this?

Yup. This is how I do it.

Personally I'd like to know how to change the default background globally.

Hmmm, did it work for you exactly as outlined in the Help page I quoted in my original post?

Yes it does - exactly.

I even testing it out on a browser window in U5.04 just to be sure this isn't because of that particular combination.

1. open browser window
2. click "edit", select "backgrounds and emblems"
3. from emblems dialog, select backgrounds tab
4. drag a tile from the dialog to the window - pattern goes in
5. drag a tile from the dialog to the side-pane - pattern goes in

I've been experimenting, trying to get the behavior you describe. Interestingly, the browser window seems to change backgrounds globally ... dosn't seem to work that way in FC4.

You may just need to update gnome, maybe the last update went bad somehow. (My hoary box is un-updated since install.

Well, for some reason mine doesn't work. I'm using just the default Ubuntu installation with all updates applied. I've gone thru all of the Preferences in Nautilus and in the Configuration Editor and I can't find anything that looks amiss. Maube you're right, something that was updated has a bug. ??? :confused:

I'll try asking on the Ubuntu forum, now that it's back up.

i jus started using nautilus in xfce, i really like it alot better then xfce's file manager but im having trouble keeping nautilus from putting icons on the desktop. ive edited the config files but they still keep popping back up. anyone now how i should go about setting nautilus to not use icons on the desktop?

I think you have to tell xfce not to do it.

I use nautilus under gnome with Fedora and Ubuntu (as well as many others) and that behavior simply dosn't occur. So I figure it is a quality of the desktop not the windows manager.

i dont think its xfce, normally when i log into xfce my desktop will be clear of any icons but as soon as i start nautilus it puts the same icons back on and uses a different wallpaper. i since set the wallpaper for xfce & nautilus to use the same. it keeps making icons for home, computer, floppy, and 2 usb flash cards...if i right click ->> properties to all of them it shows them as belonging to root which i dont understand
