Name change on Ubuntu's vmlinuz

I want to dual boot from Slackware 13.37 LILO to Ubuntu's grub.
Slack's LILO has a 31 character limit which causes an error when setting up its LILO. I am thinking of doing a name change on vmlinuz in /boot and thus in Slack's LILO. Besides the grub config file are there any other places which refer to the vmlinuz that would complicate or prevent doing the name change?

As a general statement, you can call the kernel whatever you want. Ubuntu/Debian tend to be pretty anal about things like that because they use scripts to do everything. If you merely "trim" some characters off the end you should be o.k. - don't go with "waddles_kernel" or update-grub won't find it.

U R correct about changing the name messing up updating.
I honestly did not look at the config file but believe it must contain references to /boot/vmlinuz. I am wondering though if there are other places that refer to the name given in the distro to /boot/vmlinuz... .
I have thought about using symlinking but think this could be difficult at best.
