mysql database error

Hello,

I am trying to install a database on an external hard drive, I can configure a file /etc/mysql/my.cnf

as follows

[mysqld_safe]
socket = /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
nice = 0

[mysqld]
#
# * Basic Settings
#
user = mysql
pid-file = /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid
socket = /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
port = 3306
basedir = /usr
datadir = /media/usbdisk/mysql
tmpdir = /tmp
language = /usr/share/mysql/english
skip-external-locking

this has the datadir pointing to the external hard drive but now I get the following error;

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

Any ideas?
