This is completely a wrong forum (website suggestions & feedback). But..

You'll probably need a plugin for your mp3 files. If you've installed the default Ubuntu installation, you'll need either gstreamer plugins or xine plugins; which app do you use to play mp3? Do you use Totem? If so, open Synaptic and see if you've got "Totem-xine" or "Totem-gstreamer" installed, and download then libxine-extraplugins or gstreamer's plugins accordingly.

If you're unsure you can first try downloading xine-plugins since that's what I guess you use; in console, do

Code:

sudo apt-get install libxine-extracodecs
and retry playing an mp3 file. If that doesn't help, open Synaptic and get gstreamer-plugins.

Based on your words, I will assume here that your soundcard is working fine. All you need to do is get the codecs installed. There are numerous HOWTOs, tutorials that explain how to install the full multimedia support under linux. Try google.

The above link points you to a topic that explains just that. Though it is SuSE specific, all that you would need is the packages listed in this thread.

try xmms

I had the same problem until I discovered xmms.
It looks awful (but you can download skins) but it does play mp3 without having to download anything (in my case that's how it worked).
If it's not preinstalled, I'm sure you'll find it in adept or synaptic.
Good luck.
