My Ubuntu doesn't like audio CDs
 

OK gurus - I've got an issue that is perplexing me for weeks and I haven't been able to figure it out... and the thread I created over at the ubuntu forums has tumbleweeds blowing through it, so...

Audio CD ripping/burning was working perfectly - I could rip to mp3 using SoundJuicer, and my burner of choice was k3b, which worked beautifully as well.

Well, since doing the auto-update to the "new & improved" 7.04 version, it's totally broken.
SoundJuicer still pretends it works but the files it creates are garbage, and k3b bombs out at 4% every time with an "unknown error" every time I try to burn an audio CD (even though data CDs burn just fine through it).

Any ideas where to start looking? :confused:

I would have started looking from the logfiles, what you actually upgraded; did you get any errors during the upgrade and were k3b etc. upgraded (probably were)? If you are unable to track down what caused the breakups, then you can always remove (with --purge so that config files are gone as well, to make sure) k3b and soundjuicer, probably your codecs too, and then clean package cache (so no old packages are used) and reinstall them using apt. That's a long way but unless you know exactly how the upgrade process went, it's a reasonable choice.

One thing to try before that is to start the apps from a terminal, to see some verbose messages, possible errors etc. when problems occur. And try to encode some wav files to mp3 (or something) with lame, or whatever encoder you use, without soundjuicer -- if it's really about the encoder, reinstall them.

Ok, i only read the first message, but I have ubuntu and i have had the same thing happen to me, if you look at the details on the burn process it was something like permissions are wrong for cdrecord,... i did the modifications to cdrecord permissions etc... and it still did not work, I'm not the smartest or most knowledgeable person out here (i'm actually quite noob) but what i ended up doing was reinstalling, after witche everything worked fine. :(

Also - the upgrade to 7.04 is worth it, but i did fresh install of 7.04 rather then the big long upgrade....
