Multiboot ubuntu/windows 7 encrypted with Trycrypt
I have a netbook with one drive and first installed Windows 7 (C) followed by Ubuntu (D) in different partitions. Now I want to install Truecrypt.
Q1: For this I need to know where GRUB is: in the bootsector of the partition of Windows or Ubuntu ? From googling I understand it should be in the Ubuntu partion. Just want to be sure, because this leads to my second question. Q 2: If Q1=yes, then I understand that encrypting the windows partition will give the following behaviour: starting the computer will present the choice for Windows 7 or Ubuntu. If I choose Ubuntu, it will start right away. Only if I start Windows I will be asked for my password. Is this right ? Q 3: If Q1=yes, then I understand that encrypting the Ubuntu partition in stead will give the following behaviour: after starting the computer I will directly be asked for my password, next the choice for window 7 or Ubuntu will appear. Choosing Windows will decrypt the windows partition. (Choosing Ubuntu will start Ubuntu without the need to decrypt.) Q4: if Q3=yes, can I encrypt the Ubuntu partition with the same password as in Q3 ? Will this lead to the decryption of Ubuntu if in Q3 I choose Ubuntu, without to give in my password in a second time ? Thanks. |
Grub, as defaults, is installed on the mbr on the first hdd.
But you could install it even on the partition linux. Or you could even don't install it at all. I don't think there are problem using the same password between two different systems, however truecrypt have an extensive documentation so you should facilitated to understand its functioning. |
Are you sure? From the documentation I understand that in the MBR there is a pointer to Grub which itself is in the bootsector of the ubuntu partition ?!

I am worried if I try this it will corrupt the MBR and ruin the booting process. Any information you have on this would be helpful! |
