/ mounted read-only at boot

When I boot up after an unclean shutdown, when the system tries to mount / , it says that it appears to be mounted read-only, and is skipping journal replay. It correctly detects my other linux partition as read-write and replays the journal. I'm worried that / is slowly getting corrupted from the occasional unclean shutdown and would like to fix it.

/etc/fstab is
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hdc6 / reiserfs notail 0 1
/dev/hdc5 /home reiserfs defaults 0 2
/dev/hdc1 /mnt/windows ntfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hdc7 none swap sw 0 0

It's normal. The root file system is remounted read, write later in the boot process. Usually, your bootloader(lilo or grub) is configured to initially mount root read only.
