More N00B questions, how do I change from Gnome to XPDE desktop.
 

I don't know how to install it(is it compatible?). Is it also possible to choose which desktop prog to use(Gnome, or XPDE)? I want to learn more so please explain what i need to do. This install is completely updated and running smooth.

How to install KDE on Ubuntu

After you install, you can choose which enviroment you'd like to use at the login screen. If you run into trouble come back and ask some more questions! Good luck!

Edit: After reading aysiu post #3 I realized I'm to tired to read straight, I thought you said you wanted KDE not XPDE. Follow his directions, not mine.

You can't easily install XPDE the way you can XFCE or KDE.

You'll have to download this .tar.gz, extract it, and compile it in order to use it.

Does XPDE even work? Last I read it was just a dummy desktop environment with everything broken. Not trying to dissude anyone but I don't think XPDE is ready for daily use as yet. Voriskaeo you can rather go for KDE as it would be a better way as it is fully functional.

Wow, and they claim Gnome and KDE are to much like Windows :p

recently installed ubuntu..the support forums suck bigtime...

The "support forums" are entirely made up of users like yourself. If other users don't know the answers, they don't know the answers. I don't think you're in a position to say the support forums "suck big time" unless you:

A. Provide better support yourself (in which case, maybe you should set up your own support forums)
B. Paid for the support (which I bet you didn't--because the support on the forums is free--Canonical provides its own paid support, but it's not in a forum)

More fool me for bothering to respond, but I've always found the ubuntu forums extremely helpful.

I've always found forums to be helpfull. This one, the Gentoo ones, it dosen't matter. There is always that one guy/gal who seems to know everything.

Reality check: since the responses to your unqualified statement were polite you should respond in the same way. If you can't take disagreement get off the internet.

aysiu, is XPDE actualy working and a stable desktop, or is it more or less broken like that said previously. I've used your scripts before, and I would like to try this desktop, but if its broken, I won't bother.

XPDE will not break your Ubuntu installation.

As a desktop environment itself, it is broken, though.

In other words, you won't damage your Ubuntu installation by "installing" XPDE (the script really just extracts the .tar.gz to a directory and adds a .desktop item to the list of available sessions--there's also a script that removes it), but if you expect XPDE to be functional and stable, forget it.

It also resembles XP only in a cursory way. Most of the icons still look like KDE. If you want an XP look, you're actually probably better off using Smooth-XP in Gnome or one of the Silver or XP themes in XFCE or IceWM.

I appreciate your help in this matter. I will try the scripts and install as soon as i get another comp. Fathers comp burned out a 100gb hd. i sacrificed my 80gb for him. i'm building a new comp to run win2kpro and ubuntu. any suggestions on what hardware to use for compatibility?
